The procedure
Grafts from the scalp, placed in the face
A beard transplant uses the same FUE method as a scalp transplant. The grafts come from the safe donor zone at the back of the head, and are placed into the face at the angle at which facial hair naturally grows.
Facial hair grows at a much flatter angle than scalp hair, and in different directions across the cheek, jaw and chin. Matching that angle is what makes the difference between a beard that looks grown and one that looks placed, and it is the part of the procedure that takes the time.
Single-hair grafts are generally used along the outer edge of the beard and in the moustache, with denser units placed inside the beard area. The result is designed around the beard you want to wear rather than around maximum coverage.
- Patchy growth, where the beard never filled in evenly.
- Scars, where a previous injury or surgery left a gap in the beard.
- Shaping — extending the beard line, filling the moustache or the area under the chin.

The first week
Small crusts form around each implanted hair and fall away over roughly seven to ten days. The face is more visible than the scalp, so most people plan a week without close contact with other people.
Healing on the face
Facial skin regenerates readily, which is why aftercare for a beard transplant is comparatively simple. Shaving is avoided until the area has healed; the timing is agreed at the follow-up.
Growth
The implanted hairs shed within the first weeks and the follicles begin producing new hair from around the third month. The beard reaches its settled density at about twelve months, as with a scalp transplant.

Questions about beard transplants
Can I shave normally afterwards?
Yes, once healing is complete. Transplanted hair behaves like the rest of your facial hair: it can be shaved, trimmed and shaped. Shaving is avoided in the first weeks so that the grafts are not disturbed.
Will the transplanted hair look like beard hair?
The grafts come from the scalp, so the hair keeps some of the characteristics it had there, including growth rate and texture. In practice it integrates well, and donor selection at the consultation takes the match into account.
How many grafts does a beard need?
It depends entirely on what is being corrected. Filling a single scar may take a few hundred grafts; building a full beard where little grows takes considerably more. The trichoscopic examination and the design of the beard line give the number.
